Manchester City have contacted Liverpool and the two clubs are in dialogue over Raheem Sterling's future, Sky sources understand.
City have already had two bids turned down for the England forward, with the last offer lodged in June thought to be worth around £40m.
But Manchester City are understood to be renewing their efforts to sign the 20-year-old, who returned to training on Friday after a two-day absence, and the clubs have now entered into discussions over Sterling.
In a meeting with Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers on Tuesday, Sterling is thought to have told manager Brendan Rodgers he did not wish to be considered for the pre-season tour to Australia and the Far East.
Sterling is also believed to have told Liverpool he no longer wants to play for Rodgers, a claim which has been categorically denied by the club.
Liverpool depart for their pre-season tour on Sunday and it remains to be seen whether Sterling will travel with the club. City left for their pre-season tour to the same region on Thursday.
Sterling is under contract with the Reds until 2017 but his relationship with the club has deteriorated since he turned down the opportunity to sign an improved deal in January.
Sterling made his league debut for Liverpool just over three years ago and has made 95 Premier League appearances for the club, scoring 18 goals and contributing 21 assists.
