Messi loses appeal, trial nears

Barcelona star Lionel Messi lost his appeal over tax fraud charges on Wednesday, meaning he could face a trial over the allegations which involve an estimated €4.6 million.

The Argentine international and his father Jorge were accused last year of not paying tax on earnings from the player's image rights from 2007-2009.

Both Messi and his father denied wrongdoing and instead pointed the finger instead at a former agent.
But prosecutors in Barcelona on Wednesday decided to press ahead with the case.

"While it is understandable that a player of this magnitude is not aware of all the details of managing a millionaire," they said "there are elements of a fiscal debt".

Swansea sign Ayew on free transfer

Ghana forward Andre Ayew has joined Swansea City on a free transfer and signed a four-year contract, the Premier League club said on Wednesday.

The 25-year-old has joined from French club Olympique Marseille, where his contract expired at the end of last season, having scored 10 league goals in his final campaign.

Ayew, who has 62 caps for Ghana, has played in four African Nations Cups and two World Cups.

"The project that the club has for the future is very exciting, and when I spoke to the chairman and manager I felt this was the right place for me," Ayew said on the club website.

Zico will stand for Fifa presidency

Former Brazil star Zico on Wednesday confirmed he will stand in the election to succeed Sepp Blatter as president of Fifa, although he admitted he may struggle to find enough support.
"I would like to confirm the decision to be a candidate," the 62-year-old told a news conference.

"I feel I am capable. For sure, certain rules need to change," not least the constant "horse-trading" necessitated by the need to gather the support of at least five federations.

"That need to have five federations behind you, I think that is where the corruption starts" as favours are offered, asked for or called in, Zico said.

"Much needs to change and much is going to happen"
He pointed out he had come to the conclusion he ought to make a formal bid to stand after talking with former Portugal star Figo, who briefly expressed his own desire to stand for the post before pulling out last month.

Barca to hold election on July 18

Treble-winners Barcelona will hold a presidential election on July 18, the club said on Wednesday.

The date was set after it was announced last January by then president Josep Maria Bartomeu that the election would take place at the end of the season following a crisis at boardroom level.

Bartomeu stood down as president on Tuesday to allow the election process to begin with an election committee taking over.

Police Arraigned 98 Persons Over Cult Activities In Edo State

The police on Tuesday arraigned 98 persons before a Special Magistrate Court sitting in Benin for cult related offences.

The suspects were arrested by the Special Squad sent out to Edo State by the Inspector General of Police, Mr Solomon Arase.

Reporters gathered that the court was specially set up by the Chief Judge of the state, Justice Cromwell Idahosa, following the industrial action embarked upon by judicial workers in the state.
While reacting to the arraignment, the State Commissioner of Police, Mr. Samuel Adegbuyi, disclosed that he sought the help of the IG because the rate of cult-related activities in the state was becoming worrisome.

Gunmen Molests 23-Year-Old Bread Seller To Death In Benin

Tension enveloped a section of Benin, Edo State capital, yesterday over the discovery of the body of a 23-yearold lady. The victim, identified as Joy Okoh, was abducted by gunmen, who molested her to death. Flood At Igando Today (pictures)

Our house is just a few plots from the Igando-Abaranje footbridge somewhere around Foursquare Gospel Church. We have been experiencing continual flooding due to the tiny size of the canal. The single canal here serves as exit for waters coming from Bakare in Ikotun LCDA, Abaranje and Igando and the size of the canal is just a little bit more than a gutter. Even the Foursquare Gospel Church in the next street is flooded but the water won't allow me go out to take much pictures. . . This happened just this morning.

Scandal-plagued Fifa postponed the bidding for the right to host the 2026 World Cup on Wednesday and embarked on the search to find a replacement for outgoing President Sepp Blatter.

McClaren set for Newcastle job

Former England head coach Steve McClaren is favourite to be named as Newcastle United's new manager after the club confirmed on Wednesday that interim boss John Carver and his assistant Steve Stone had left the club.
