Phil Jones signs new Manchester United contract

England defender Phil Jones has signed a new deal with Manchester United which keeps him at Old Trafford until June 2019.

The 23-year-old, who has an option to extend for a further year, has made 128 appearances for United since making his debut in 2011, collecting a Premier League winner's medal in 2013.

Jones told the club's official website: "I am delighted to have signed a new deal. I have thoroughly enjoyed my time here so far and am looking forward to continuing my development as a player.

"This a great club to be part of and I cannot wait to start the new campaign. I would like to thank the manager, coaching staff and fans for their continued support."

United manager Louis van Gaal added: "We are delighted that Phil has signed a new contract. He is a talented footballer with great versatility and can play in a number of positions.

"Phil is a relatively young defender who is developing all the time. He missed some of last season due to injury but I was impressed by his professionalism and attitude during those periods."

Jones has 17 senior England caps and has also represented his county at U19 and U21 level.

He started his career at Blackburn and progressed to their senior side from the academy in 2009 before spending two more years at Ewood Park ahead of his switch to Old Trafford.
