If you're currently suffering from moderate to intense tooth pain, you're likely looking for a way to get rid of the pain fast and effectively.
You may need to get professional dental treatment in order to get rid of the pain permanently, but in the meantime, there are plenty of first aid and alternative home treatments you can try to soothe the ache. Keep reading to learn more.
Remove any trapped food. Use dental floss to carefully remove any food particles lodged between two teeth in the pained area of your mouth.
- After flossing, rinse your mouth thoroughly. Rapidly swish warm water around in your mouth to loosen any food particles. Spit the water out when done.
Avoid chewing on the painful area. Until you can get rid of the tooth pain, you should chew on the other side of your mouth.
- In addition to avoiding the hurt area of your mouth, cover any exposed holes responsible for causing the pain. If your tooth is cracked or otherwise damaged, you could temporarily cover it with softened chewing gum or dental wax until you can schedule an appointment with your dentist.
Take pain medication. Use an over-the-counter pain
reliever like aspirin, acetaminophen, ibuprofen, or naproxen sodium.
Follow the instructions on the label to determine the correct dosage.
- For most pain relievers, you will take one or two pills every four to six hours. Exact dosages vary by medication and brand, however.
Use a topical pain medication. Apply an
over-the-counter topical ointment containing benzocaine directly to the
tooth or gum experiencing pain. Follow the label directions to determine
the proper amount and application.
- Do not put aspirin or other painkillers directly on the pained gum tissue. Doing so will burn and cause more pain.
- Only use topical pain relievers approved for dental use. Other topical pain killers could be dangerous if ingested.
Apply a cold compress. Wrap an ice cube in a plastic
bag or a thin cloth and apply it to the jawline surrounding the pained
tooth for 10 to 15 minutes.
- Cold temperatures reduce blood flow to area they are applied to. As blood flow drops, swelling and pain is reduced.
- Take breaks in 10 to 15 minute intervals. After each break, continue to apply the compress to the hurt area as needed.
