CAF punishes Onazi
The Confederation of African Football (CAF) on Wednesday slammed a 2 match ban on Nigeria midfielder Ogenyi Onazi for unsportsmanlike conduct in a 2017 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier in Kaduna last weekend.
Onazi was given a straight red card 12 minutes from regulation time for a push on a Chadian player after Idion Ighalo was fouled in the Chadian box which resulted in a penalty to the Super Eagles.
In the ensuing melee, the SS Lazio of Rome player appeared to have shoved a Chadian defender to the ground.
Nigerien referee Ibrahim Mamane gave Onazi his marching orders and it is now confirmed the midfielder will serve a two game suspension.
A letter from the African football body received by the Nigeria Football Federation stated that for the “violent conduct, player No.17 Eddy Ogenyi Onazi was expelled and he is automatically suspended for his next 2 official matches: 39 – Tanzania Vs Nigeria and 66: Nigeria Vs Egypt.”
Onazi will now miss Nigeria’s game away at Tanzania on September 5th and the next 2017 Afcon qualifier against Egypt on March 25 2016.
The Super Eagles trail the Pharaohs of Egypt on goals scored in Group G of the qualifiers as Chad and Tanzania are in third and fourth place respectively.
