Appiah suffers cruciate ligament damage

A cruciate ligament tear has ruled Kwesi Appiah out of Ghana’s Afcon 2017 qualifier against Mauritius.

The Crystal Palace forward who burst onto the scene and excelled in his early days as a Ghana international after head coach Avram Grant took him to the Nations Cup in Equatorial Guinea had received yet another invitation for the home qualifier on June 14.

However, his chance to play in the Ghana colours before home crowd has been delayed by the cruciate ligament injury he suffered during the Black Stars’ opening raining session at the JMG Academy grounds last Thursday.

The doctors after initial scans, have confirmed his unavailability for the Stars game at the Accra Sports Stadium, spokesperson of the Ghana FA has confirmed.

”Kwesi Appiah suffered a cruciate ligament injury in one of our training sessions and the team doctors have ruled him out of the Mauritius game,” Ibrahim Sannie Daara said.

“He could be out for weeks if not probably months. So Kwesi would have to go back to the UK for further treatment. Unfortunately, his personal doctor is on holiday. He is yet to reach him so he is still in Accra.

The Ghana FA spokesperson further clarified the circumstances with which Trabzonspor forward Majeed Waris got a late invitation to join the squad.

“Fortunately, around that time, the coach also said that because our strikers had not arrived – David Accam and Albert Adomah, Majeed Waris was also in town so was asked to join the squad,” Sannie explained.

David Accam who had initially been reported to be unavailable has finally been released by Chicago Fire after he scored in the side’s 2-3 loss to Orlando SC on Saturday. Accam is expected to arrive in camp on Monday likewise Spain-based goalkeeper Razak Brimah and FC Copenhagen defender Daniel Amartey.

The three are the only players yet to report to camp as the time the Black Stars held their last training session ahead of Monday’s test match with Togo.

Ghana will be hosting Togo in a warm-up friendly at the Accra Sports Stadium at 3pm GMT (5pm CAT).
